SYNOPSIS
Schindler Space Architect is an independently produced documentary examining the life and work of a modern architecture pioneer Rudolph M. Schindler. Narrated by Meryl Streep and Udo Kier, and featuring insights from architects Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, Wolf Prix, Thom Mayne, the film explores how the Austrian-born visionary laid the foundation of California’s iconic indoor-outdoor lifestyle. A true original, Schindler spent over 30 years experimenting and forging his own path through the volatile ups and downs of a creative genius.
This documentary explores Schindler’s richly complex work, tracing influences from the turn-of-the-century Vienna, the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright and the pueblos of Taos. It is an investigation into Schindler’s philosophy of Space Architecture as contrasted with the dominant International Style. It engagingly reexamines Schindler’s bohemian lifestyle and his complicated relationship with his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright, and his former friend turned rival, Richard Neutra. While Neutra became the celebrated poster boy for the International Style, the overlooked Schindler developed further Wright’s ideas of space architecture. Ultimately, both Viennese expatriates became the quintessential California architects. The documentary asks key questions about the importance of domestic architecture in creating a national culture and its role as a living entity that shapes humanity. It affirms the singular genius of one man, and the eternal challenge every artist faces to stay true to their vision in an effort to leave a lasting impact.
